Sweet mentioned that the Linnaean Illecebrum species belong in Alternanthera and referenced to Brown (Prodr. 416-417. 1810), who essentially did the same. Thus Sweet indirectly referred to I. achyrantha L. as synonym of A. achyrantha. He, however, did not cite the Linnaean name itself or include its holotype. Therefore, A. achyrantha is legitimate.
