Remarks

Schnell inadvertently published S. rubra subsp. wherryi as a subsp. nov.; he intended it as a comb. nov. and referred to S. alabamensis subsp. wherryi Case & R.B.Case (in Rhodora 78(814): 315. 1976 (invalid)) as the basionym. Schnell's reference to S. alabamensis subsp. wherryi provides the required Latin description and holotype citation needed for a valid publication of S. rubra subsp. wherryi.
