Remarks
Spring published S. apus (a noun epithet) and based it on Lycopodium apodum L.; Morton (Amer. Fern J. 57: 104-106. 1964) corrected S. apus to S. apoda (an adjectival feminine epithet) and credited the new combination to Spring (l.c.). However, Morton's correction is inadmissible; ‘… consequently S. apus was nomenclaturally superfluous when published and is illegitimate’ (see Shenzhen Code Art. 61 Ex. 2).
