W. T. Aiton made an incorrect comb. nov.; Melanthium L. 1753 (syntypes: M. sibiricum L. & M. virginicum L.) and Veratrum L. 1753 (syntypes: V. album L., V. luteum L. & V. nigrum L.) have equal priroity; Thunberg (Diss. Melanthio 1-10. Dec 1797) chose Melanthium over Veratrum and treated the 3 Veratrum species of Linnaeus as Melanthium species; Thunberg's choice established the priority of Melanthium over Veratrum (cf., Vienna Code Art. 11.5).
