L. C. M. Richard (Mém. Mus. Hist. Nat. 1: 365. 1815) listed Echinodorus without a description/diagnosis. Gray ascribed the generic name to Richard, Engelmann, and stated that he adopt this restituted genus from Dr. Engelmann's MSS.
