Remarks
Jacquin mentioned “Reduxeram antea hanc plantam ad Spinaciam”. Based on the preceding statement, Howard (J. Arnold Arbor. 54(4): 467. Oct 1973) construed that Jacquin renamed his Spinacia littoralis Jacq. (1760) as Axyris pentandra; with such a belief, Howard treated A. pentandra as a superfluous illegitimate name. However, Jacquin neither mentioned S. littoralis as a synonym nor included its type. Therefore, the name A. pentandra was legitimate when published.
