Muhl. (Cat. Pl. Amer. Sept. 4. 1813) and F. T. Hubb. (Rhodora 14: 166. 1912) also made this new combination (isonyms); Gandhi & Dutton (Taxon 42: 855-856. 1993) discussed the authorship of this species. On p. 14, the genus Erianthus is treated; on p. 151, the basionym is listed; on p. 177, Saccharum giganteum, a nomenclatural synonym, is listed.
