Search by Distribution

PLEASE NOTE: APNI records in IPNI do not include distribution information. You may find more detailed information including maps at the APNI site. IK and Gray Card records used different standards for recording distributions. Please see below for detailed information on how to search for names from a particular country

This search will work best for names published in more recent years. Prior to that, information about distribution was not always included or has not always been standardised or correctly parsed out of the system. In addition, IPNI only records the distribution of new taxa as given at the time of publication. Subsequent extensions or contractions of a taxon's range have not been recorded. The results of a distribution search should therefore be considered only as a rough guide.

IK records entered after 2003 used the TDWG standard World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions. This scheme allows hierarchichal searching - for instance, new taxa recorded in 'Kenya' will also be retrieved if you search on 'Africa' or 'East Tropical Africa'. Please note that some countries are split over a number of TDWG areas so that searching for the United States only includes the mainland United States; to also search for taxa occurring in Alaska or Hawaii, these terms would have to be searched for separately.

Gray Card records entered after 1992 used Harvard's own standards for recording distributions. For New World distributions (North and South America) distributions have been recorded where possible down to the state or county level. These are also hierarchical so taxa recorded in 'Ohio' will also be retrieved if you search on the United States or North America.

To search on a number of countries or terms simultaneously, use either a comma delimited list or a boolean query where the terms are delimited by '|' (See the example boolean searches for more information on boolean searches).
